What is a well woman exam?

A well woman exam is a yearly checkup focused on your reproductive and overall health. It’s a chance to talk with your OB/GYN, ask questions, and stay on top of essential screenings.

Well woman visits are an important part of caring for yourself at every age. These exams help catch health issues early, often before you notice symptoms.

The Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology team recommends starting well woman exams in the teenage years, usually around age 13 to 15.

What does a well woman exam include?

During a well woman exam, the Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology team checks things like your blood pressure and weight to evaluate your general health. It’s also a great time to talk about birth control, periods, menopause, and anything else on your mind.

If you’re due for cancer screening, your well woman exam may include a mammogram referral (for breast cancer) and/or a Pap smear (for cervical cancer). Well woman exams also include a physical breast check and an internal exam to check for any abnormalities.

What happens during a well woman exam?

Your Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology provider starts by reviewing your health history and asking about any concerns. Then, they check your vital signs and weigh you. Bring a list of medications you’re taking and any questions or concerns. If you’ve had tests done at another office, those records can be helpful, too.

Depending on your age and needs, the process then moves on to a breast exam, pelvic exam, and/or Pap smear. Your provider explains everything they do and why beforehand and does their best to make the exam as comfortable as possible.

Some elements may feel a little awkward or new, especially the first time, but nothing should be painful. If something doesn’t feel right, let your provider know — they are there to support you.

Can I ask questions during my well woman exam?

A well woman exam is your time to ask anything. From period problems to sex, birth control, or mental health, no question is too small or too personal. The visit is all about putting your health first.

The Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology team is here to listen, support, and care for you at every stage of your life. Call your nearest office to learn more about well woman exams or request one online today.
